One young person’s life will change dramatically later this month when the Bristol Young Student of the Year Awards draw to a close and the winner of the top individual prize is announced.
BPP University College is offering one entrant in the awards the chance to take up an apprenticeship course in accountancy or a degree course in accountancy, law or business at its Queen Square centre.
The awards themselves are giving Bristol’s 16 year old-plus State school students the opportunity to develop the business skills they need to help them find work when they leave school.
Teams from a number of schools across the city are competing to produce the best iPhone app for four clients – the Bloodhound project, BrisFest, Co-exist/Hamilton House and The Station, the new centre for arts and technology opening later this year in the former central fire station.
The students have been working with real businesses to develop their employability skills, been coached by Bristol BBC staff on structuring and delivering a presentation with impact, and have had a masterclass, hosted by The Mall at Cribbs Causeway, to show them how to dress for success at a job interview.
They will wear these outfits down the catwalk as part of the awards ceremony, which takes place at The Mall on March 26, following Bristol Fashion Week.
For the students taking part it has been a long and often challenging journey and feedback from one of the teams bears uncanny similarities to life in the real business world.
“We hate working to deadlines; we can never get hold of our client; why do dates for meetings keep changing? Work is too stressful” are among their comments.
