The Bristol office of property adviser GVA has been instructed by administrators Grant Thornton to market the former prep school Tawstock Court near Barnstaple.
Offers are being invited for the freehold sale of the Grade II-listed property in 32 acres. The main house, which is built around an enclosed courtyard, currently comprises offices and classrooms.
The sale includes a number of outbuildings and facilities, including a children’s nursery and former gym, an outdoor swimming pool, sports hall, as well as a theatre, residential flat and sports pitches.
James Petherick, of GVA’s land and development team said: “As might be expected for this impressive building in such a beautiful location, we have already received a number of serious enquiries and we anticipate there will be more to come, reflecting the fact there could be a variety of potential uses for the development of this property.”
Tawstock Court had been run as a private preparatory school since 1940. Before that the main house, believed to have been built in 1787, was a private home. The site itself is mentioned in the Domesday Book and the original buildings, most of which were destroyed by fire, date back to the 16th century. A 16th century gatehouse however, remains.
Nigel Morrison of Grant Thornton said: “As administrators, our priority is to realise the value of the property as far as is possible in order to maximise returns to creditors. We have already received a substantial amount of interest from various potential acquirers."
