The gloves will be off at a charity quiz in Bristol next month as one of Britain’s best-known former boxers takes the quizmaster’s hot seat.
One-time world light-heavyweight champion John Conteh MBE, pictured, will ensure there is a clean fight between battling teams at the quiz on May 31, which will be raising funds for Empire Fighting Chance, one of the city’s most inspiring charities.
Empire Fighting Chance helps tackle issues faced by vulnerable young people from deprived communities.
Organisers of the event, to be staged at the DoubleTree by Hilton Bristol City Centre hotel, are seeking teams of up to eight contestants for they hope will be knockout evening.
Doors will open at 6.30pm, with the bell ringing for the first round of the quiz at 7.30pm. There will also be an auction of sporting memorabilia and raffle, overseen by John Conteh, who held multiple titles in the 1970s including the WBC light-heavyweight belt between 1974 and 1978.
The cost of entry includes a welcome drink and two-course dinner.
Empire Fighting Chance was created in 2013 and now works with more than 250 young people a week in the communities throughout Bristol. Its HQ is at the redeveloped Mill Youth Centre in Easton, a purpose-built facility which includes a state-of-the-art gym, classrooms and studio space.
Co-founder Martin Bisp said: “Bristol is a hugely vibrant and successful city but there are huge inequalities between different parts and is home to some of the most deprived areas in the whole country.
“In St Pauls, it is estimated that one out of two young people live in poverty with many families not being able to afford books, computers, good nutrition or adequate housing. In Easton and St Pauls there is also a devastating mix of low academic achievement, high unemployment and mental health issues.
“The gang culture is also rife which brings with it drug issues and violence while there are limited services to support young people.
“The aim of Empire Fighting Chance is to turn young people’s lives around helping them improve their education, their emotional capabilities, mental health, employment prospects and reducing crime.”
According to Empire Fighting Chance, 92% of the young people who spent time at its gym improved school attendance while 88% were no longer deemed at risk of exclusion.
Some 96% said they felt more confident with 75% progressing onto further learning opportunities.
DoubleTree by Hilton Bristol City Centre general manager John Dowling added: “Empire Fighting Chance is a truly inspiring place. The combination of non-contact boxing alongside intensive individual support has really helped turn the fortunes around of many young people and we look forward to developing an on-going partnership with Martin and his team.”
