Bristol community radio station Ujima’s founder Roger Griffith has been awarded a Lord Mayor’s Medal for his passion for promoting equality.
Roger, pictured, founded the St Paul’s-based station in 2009 and has since attracted more than 250 volunteers to work at it in a wide range of roles from DJs and presenters and producers to managers.
He is involved with The Green and Black Ambassadors initiative, the Bristol Manifesto for Race Equality and chairs BME Voice in Bristol.
In 2015 he also sat on the Arts Council South West board, playing a key role in networking and championing the underrepresented.
Roger was one of 20 ‘unsung heroes’ from across Bristol presented with the awards by Lord Mayor Cllr Lesley Alexander at a ceremony at the Lord Mayor’s official residence The Mansion House in Clifton.
The medals go to individuals who have dedicated their time to charity fundraising, supporting the elderly and young people, promoting the city, supporting their community and tackling issues such as the housing crisis, unemployment and inequality.
Lord Mayor Cllr Lesley Alexander said: “It is inspiring to hear about the good work that these selfless individuals have done to support people in need across the city.
“They are truly dedicated to helping others and their work provides an absolute lifeline to so many people. This event is a way of celebrating that and saying thank you for everything they have done.”
