Helphire, the Bath-based accident-claim handler which reported losses of £34.1m in the year to June 30, has recruited industry heavy-hitter John L. Davies as a non-executive director with immediate effect.

The company, which works with the insurance and motor industries to provide replacement vehicles to motorists involved in accidents, went through a major boardroom shuffle in September when Richard Rose stepped down as executive chairman while Lord Howard of Lympne (Michael Howard) and Andrew Cripps resigned as non-executive directors.

Simultaneously Avril Palmer-Baunack was appointed non-executive chairman. As chief executive officer of Autologic Holdings -

the largest vehicle finished logistics company in the UK and Europe -

she worked closely with John Davies who is currently Autologic's non-executive chairman, a non-executive director of Molins PLC and chairman of the Vehicle Remarketing Association.

Helphire said in a statement: "John brings a wealth of relevant experience having been, until he retired in 2006, managing director of Lloyds TSB's Asset Finance Division which, amongst other businesses, included the bank's motor-related operations.  Prior to that John was group head of consumer finance for Standard Chartered Bank and managing director of their UK finance house subsidiary Chartered Trust.  He has also held the positions of managing director of United Dominions Trust, a subsidiary of Lloyds TSB and a director of the Finance and Leasing Association.  In his career John has also been involved in a number of joint ventures with motor manufacturers and motor importers."

Its shares were down nearly 8% or 0.15p at 1.75p this afternoon.
