New figures show that South West exporters out performed the national picture last year, increasing the volume of overseas sales by 10.6% compared to a national decrease of 2.7%.

The data released by HM Revenue and Customs found that the total value of South West exports in 2015 was £15.2bn, an increase of 10.6% compared to 2014.

The region also achieved an increase in the total number of exporters over the same period. Nationally, the value of exports last year fell 2.7% to £279m.

Phil Smith, managing director of Business West – the region’s largest business group and the organisation behind Bristol Chamber of Commerce and the Initiative in Bristol– said: “The latest data shows the South West exports have increased by over £1.4bn, backing up what we’ve seen here at Business West, as in the past year we’ve supported more companies to export than ever before.

“This news proves that the world loves West Country products and services, which should give local businesses a shot in the arm and encourage others to take their trade overseas.”

He said brands such as Wiltshire-based innovative engineer and appliance firm Dyson and Renishaw, the global engineering group based in Gloucestershire, were recognised across the world and painted a positive picture for the region.

“That said, the job is far from done. We know there are many firms out there who are not aware of the support available to tap into international markets, and they will be reading this news wondering how to get involved,” he added.

“To these firms we say come and take the advice available both from Business West and UK Trade & Investment. Between us we can help at every stage of the export journey. A useful starting point is the 10 events being staged in the South West during Exporting is GREAT Week taking place between April 18 and 22.

“Research shows that successful export businesses achieve greater growth and higher profitability, and we should use today’s news as a springboard to future international success.”

The region’s top export markets by value were Germany, France, the US, Ireland and Italy.

Business West represents more than 16,000 businesses across the South West through its network of chambers of commerce and initiatives.
