Innovative Bristol architecture firm Childs+Sulzmann has been appointed to design the next phase of investment at the luxurious Thornbury Castle Hotel.
Sometimes referred to as the last Tudor castle in England, the building, pictured, dates from 1512 and hosted Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn on their honeymoon.
The multi-million pound development by owners Luxury Family Hotels will include 15 new guest rooms, a function suite and luxury spa all within the castle walls.
Childs+Sulzmann is familiar with the historic Grade 1 listed castle, having completed several sensitive projects on the property and worked closely with English Heritage over a number of years on the development of some of the existing facilities, including some extraordinary luxury suites.
The firm said its ambition was to insert some highly contemporary elements into the historic fabric of the castle to provide the modern facilities a luxury hotel needs – without compromising this unique heritage environment.
Childs+Sulzmann design director Nick Childs said the previous interventions had been hugely successful and were particularly appealing to overseas guests.
“We are delighted to have been invited back for this next phase of development,” he said.
“We love the building and we have a long association with the owners, Luxury Family Hotels. We are very much looking forward to the challenge of this next project.”
Childs+Sulzmann, led by its two founding partners Nick Childs and Peter Sulzmann, works with national public and private sectors clients in projects spanning architecture, urban planning, conservation and masterplanning.
Its portfolio includes sports and leisure, hotels and restaurants, education, conservation, community and cultural buildings.
