Bristol firms are joining organisers of Cycle to Work Day and encouraging their employees to pledge to bike to work on September 4.
Tens of thousands of cyclists across the country took part in last year’s Cycle to Work Day, riding a total of a quarter of a million miles, offsetting nearly 7,000kg of CO2 and burning more than 12m calories.
Cycle to Work Day is organised by Cyclescheme, which enables firms to help their employees get a bike tax-free. It says this year's event is set to be even bigger.
All firms taking part will offer free ‘bike breakfasts’ to staff who cycle to work on the day.
Among Bristol firms taking part is the city's Radisson Blu Hotel. Stephen Smith from the hotel said: “Britain’s Biggest Bike Breakfast is not just about rewarding those that cycle into work, there is also a benefit to not starting the day on an empty stomach.”
British Cycling’s coaching and education manager Vinny Webb added: “A post-ride bite to eat, such as a bowl of porridge, is an important way to start the day and helps the body to refuel.
“That re-energised feeling they’ll get from cycling to work will help them feel set for a day at work, not least because they’ll then be looking forward to a ride home that evening.
“People who ride to work make better employees because they statistically take fewer days off sick per year.”
