Bristol-based national plant and equipment hire specialist Hewden has signed a 10-year lease on the former Third Way, Avonmouth, base of Chep, the pallet supplier.

The site became available following Chep’s relocation to a purpose-built facility at nearby Central Park.

The property gives Hewden 22,082 sq ft of offices and production space in two buildings on a 2.2-acre site, including a large secure yard area. Hewden plans to invest in the site to establish a large new regional depot.

The remainder of the plot is being occupied by its owner Kings Heavy Haulage, which is headquartered on an adjacent site. The deal doubles the size of its depot.

The Bristol office of property consultants Alder King acted on behalf of Kings Heavy Haulage.

Alder King’s Bristol industrial agency partner Andrew Ridler said: “Properties with large yard areas like this are a very scarce commodity and we always see strong interest when they come to the market.  As a result we were able to secure this letting to Hewden very quickly.”

Kings Heavy Haulage managing director Steve King added: “The move completes a project which started with the acquisition of the property when it was let to Chep. The enlarged property allows us to base our fleet on one site and also considerably expand the services we offer our customers.”

Hewden marketing director Jeff Schofield said: "The opening of the new facility continues our long association with the Bristol area and is an integral part of our move towards a national hub and spoke depot network.

“Our aim is to create a platform for a superior service, which already includes guaranteed next day delivery on our Core Fleet of most popular plant and access products.

“The depot’s location close to the M5 motorway ensures we can continue to service customers and other Hewden depots in the South West and South Wales.

“We’ve made a significant investment in the new facility, which will continue to provide employment in the area, whilst boosting the local economy.”

Hewden was advised by Fairhurst Estates.
