Each week Bristol Business News gives a prominent member of the city’s business community the last word on its weekly e-bulletin.

This week John David, Head of Rathbone Greenbank Investments, answers our 10 questions.

What was the LAST:

Film you watched? The Grand Budapest Hotel. I live in the countryside so visits to the cinema are rare. I watched this as a download having read the reviews and I loved the quirky nature of the story and filming.

Book you read? Last Friends by Jane Gardam. A friend kindly sent me the trilogy (Filth, the Man in the Wooden Hat and Last Friends) when he saw that the story was set in Hong Kong (where I lived in the 90s) and the village on the Dorset/Wiltshire border where I live now. It is a wonderfully poignant story of life and love and a glimpse into a different age.

Music you bought/downloaded? Tango – Astor Piazollo. My wife and I had the trip of a lifetime to Argentina last year and I bought this to accompany the inevitable family photo viewings. I’m not sure it helps.

Concert or play you went to? The Larmer Tree Festival. A wonderfully relaxed family festival in a stunning setting on Cranborne Chase.

Sporting event you attended? Badminton – to satisfy my wife’s love all of all things equine.

Holiday you went on? Hong Kong – to revisit old friends and old haunts. Barely recognisable from my time there (which ended in 1996) though it still has the same amazing energy. Sadly it now offers an alarm call for uncontrolled pollution on an increasingly urbanised planet.

Restaurant you ate in? Pythouse Garden. A lovely walled garden with healthy home grown organic food.

Thing that annoyed you? My wirehaired vizsla puppy – muddy paws and suits don’t mix. Especially on your shoulders. Are puppies meant to be that big…?

Thing that made you laugh out loud? My wirehaired vizsla puppy. Endless humour – a real clown.

Piece of good advice you were given? When planting trees place the stake on the windward side. Like much advice obvious when you think about it.  Experience is so important in all aspects of life and it always pays to listen to what others have to say.

John David joined Rathbones in 2001 and was a founding member of Rathbone Greenbank Investments. Born in Dorset and a graduate of Exeter University he now lives on the Dorset/Wiltshire border having lived in the Far East, London and Bristol. He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute for Securities & Investment and a Fellow of the Royal Asiatic Society.
