An all-female line-up of local artists will pay tribute to Bristol civil rights leaders with an event presented by Ujima Radio at the city’s St George’s concert venue.
Sisters With Voices, on Wednesday October 5, features singers, spoken word performers, DJs and a visual artist. 
It celebrates women today, and is inspired by legendary community activists Princess Campbell, Leotta Goodridge and Carmen Beckford who fought tirelessly for racial equality in Bristol and across Britain.
The event forms part of the Ujima Autumn Spectacular Cultural Season, funded through Arts Council England and supported by St George’s.
Artists will include Celestine, the Bristol singer-songwriter and contestant on BBC 1’s The Voice; Dionne Draper, a session artist for Basement Jaxx; Reggae troupe Tan Teddy; Sophia May, tour support act for Grammy-winner Pharrell Williams; and new talent Chantaleaze, a Studio 7 protégé of acclaimed artist and coach Kizzy Morrell.
Ujima Radio is led and run entirely by volunteers and recently won UK Community Radio Station of the Year and Best Female Presenter awards. It is also a National Diversity champion award winner.
Dionne Draper, who is also director of Sing With Soul and co-producer, said: “The event is inspired by legendary female community activists such as Princess Campbell, Leotta Goodridge and Carmen Beckford.
“They have inspired generations of community activists who continue to celebrate and promote female empowerment and equality.”
Ujima Radio executive chair of and co-producer Roger Griffith added: “Ujima salutes these women and our community by staging this fantastic showcase at the historic venue of St George’s.
“We have been working with a number of local artists and curators under the umbrella of the newly-formed Ujima Cultural Collective to showcase black and under-represented talent.”
There will also be a live broadcast of Sisters With Voices, with recordings online.
Other Ujima Autumn Cultural Spectacular events include a Family Arts and Culture Fun Day at Circomedia on October 22, coverage of a Black History Month event with Bristol City Council at M-Shed on October 15 and, for the first time, Soul Music Live for BBC Radio 4 on November 29 at Trinity Community Arts Centre.
